PENERJEMAHAN FILM THOMAS AND FRIENDS “LEGENDA SODOR TENTANG HARTA KARUN YANG HILANGâ€
Abstract
Subtitling is a combination of audio and visual translation from the source language into the target language. Subtitling itself has become an interesting research topic to discuss along with the rapid technology development. This study aims to analyze the subtitling of a movie for children and what moral lessons are conveyed through the movie. The results of this study can be used as a guideline in subtitling for children’s movies so that natural and readable subtitle can be produced.
This is a descriptive qualitative study with the English and Indonesian subtitle of Thomas and Friends entitled Sodor’sLegenda The Lost Treasure as the data. In order to complete the analysis of this study, the visual aspects are also inserted as the data of this study. The main theory applied to this study are the legibility and readability aspects proposed by Karamitroglou (1998) and supported with the theory of Tomaszkiewicz (1993). The legibility aspect includes the position, number of lines, and number of characters while the readability aspect includes the translation strategies and punctuations.
The results of this study show that the subtitling of Thomas and Friends has meet the legibility aspect which includes the position, number of lines, and number of characters. The punctuations which belong to readability aspect need more attention and the translation strategy being used to translate the movie is the literal translation strategy because it refers to the context of the movie which is humanizing trains. The moral lessons conveyed in the movie are selflessness and learn from mistakes.
