Abstract

This research is entitled “Indirectness of Expression in the Poetry Book Buton, Ibu, Sekantong Luka by Irianto Ibrahim.” The aim is to describe a method structured as meaning substitution, meaning deviation, and meaning creation. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The data sources are Buton 1969, Sekantong Luka dari Seorang Ibu, and Sebuah Cerita dari Dua Gelas Kopi by Irianto Ibrahim. The research results from the Indirect Expression of Michael Riffaterre’s theory are: meaning substitution includes four similes, five metaphors, five personifications, four allegories, three synecdoches, six metonyms, and four parables of the epic. The two deviations of meaning resulted in four ambiguities, four contradictions, and three nonsenses. The three creators of meaning produce three enjambments, five rhymes of sound repetition, and three typographies.
