Abstract

This study examines the French people's loyalty to the government in the novel Le Ventre de Paris. As a naturalist author, Émile Zola depicts reality objectively, without manipulation or idealization. Through this novel, Zola depicts the life of society in his time with explicit and realistic details in the 19th century. The tension in society in this market divided society into anti-government and pro-government. This study will discuss the group loyal to the government, explaining how their loyalty is formed. This study's results indicate that the supporting authority tends to be apathetic and prefers to obey the existing power for personal gain, without trying to encourage change, even though they witness injustice around them. The group supporting authority is individuals who benefit from the stability of the existing social order because the system guarantees their security, wealth, and social position. For them, the existence of authority is not only a tool to protect economic interests, but also a symbol of stability and order that they consider essential to maintain their lifestyle.
